About love - and my 15 minutes!

Just a wee pause in the travel story. Even though I have now been back in Europe since the 10th of March there is still some things to tell from Rio and the splendor of that city. So you have something to look forward to :).
Anyway, I have been busy since I came back. First, a week after my return in Copenhagen, my girlfriend came to visit me from New Zealand. Yes...for those who did not know, I now have a girlfriend. Her name is Kathleen Carroll and she is from Scotland (photo above). We met in Argentina in January and it was love at first sight :).
She came to Copenhagen in March and stayed there for 3 weeks. We also took a 4 day trip to Scotland to surprise her mother for mothers day (and boy was she surprised) and to see the rest of her family members. That was actually my 5th visit to Scotland and I loved every minute of it:).
On the 4th of April she went back to New Zealand to continue her travels but will return in August.:)
I headed back to Iceland around the middle of April. Since I have been back I have been taking part in a short play (photo left) that will be staged in Borgarleikhúsið (a big theater in Reykjavik) on a short play festival friday the 5th of April along with 12 other plays. I have also had my interview taken by the newspaper Bladid (because of my travels) and for the same reason will be interviewed for the Radio station KissFm on May the 4th. Tuesday I go back to work in the reception at Hotel Reynihlid in Myvatnsveit, the same hotel where I was working last summer and you are all welcome to visit me there:)
Hasta la pasta amigos :)

Ilha Grande

After a rocking Rolling weekend in Rio me and Marcella went to an island about 4 hours from Rio (2½ hours by bus 1½ hour with a boat) to relax and regain strenght before the carnaval. It was very nice with beautiful beaches, nice hiking and basically great fun with great people.
The best way to describe Ilha Grande and our stay there is with pictures:
Arriving in Ilha Grande a small village (the only village on the island) that gets overpopulated during the holliday season. During the Carnaval weekend there were so many people that some of them were camping on the beach which is forbidden so they were send home with the next boat.
Going by boat is a pretty common way to get around over there. Here is the Ilha Grande gang: (from the left)Marcella,Daniella,Clayton(from Brazil),Kathrine and Chris(from Edinburgh,Scotland).
Trecking can be very hard in 35 degrees celcius with almost 100% humidity.
Maybe it is better to chill at a nice beach (Lopez Mendes) with a good book. (If you think I am very white on this picture it is just because the light hits me in a certain way) ;) The sand was the whitest sand I have ever seen, and when you walked in it, it made a sound like when you walk in dense snow.
It can also be nice to relax at the nearst local bar ...
Even if you have to take a boat to get there.
On the way to the green lagoon to do some snorkling.
A watermelon salesman going from one boat to the next.
Sailing into the sunset.

That night we had a great night out and some of us had way too much caiperinha ;)
The next day it was back to the mainland to get ready for the biggest party in the world.
Next: Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro

A Bigger Bang at Copacabana beach

I realise that I am just a little bit behind in my travel story but here comes some more:

Shortly after arriving in Rio there happend to be a free consert with none other than the Rolling Stones at Copacabana beach. Of course there was no way that I would miss this opportunity to see four old geesers jumping around on stage like 20 year olds. It is quite an experience to go to a consert with more than one million people I must say!(some sources say it was all in all 1.5 million ppl). However, this was not the biggest consert ever as some might think. In 1994 the biggest consert ever was held at the same place and can you guess who was performing?.....Non other than ROD STEWART!! Anyways, me, Marcella and two of her friends took the metro to the consert and as we came to the beach we found out that we were right behind the stage. So we, a little foolishly perhaps, tried to go past it to get to a better place. Suddenly we were just outside the hotel where The Stones were staying (they had a ramp going from the hotel to the stage) and they happend to come out on the balcony and all went nuts....people were screaming "calma calma! don´t panic" but that only seamed to make things worse...we seperated into pairs and me and Marcellas friend Lisasha managed to get out of crowd and breath again after having all the air squeesed out of us it was a pretty scary experience especially in over 30°C. Half an hour later we met up with Marcella and her friend at the subway station where there was a meating point. We then walked far from the stage and watched the consert on a big screen wich was quite nice and the sound was very good. After the consert (which ended with "Satisfaction", making 1.5 million ppl. go crazy) we found a bar and waited for 2 hours before venturing back home with the subway. I seamed to be relatively well controlled by 10.000 policemen and no-one got hurt.
thats it for now...next: Ilha Grande
